Bemis is an unincorporated community in Deuel County in the northeast corner of the U.S. state of South Dakota. It is not officially recognized by the state, but it elects a ceremonial mayor.
The town is entirely residential, with twelve houses along a 0.3-mile (0.48 km) stretch of road, and its area is 0.3 square miles (0.78 km2). 2/3 of the houses are occupied by married couples, and 40 is the average age. The population is about 37. Caucasians and Hispanics are the majorities.
Once, this was a relatively large town. This was when the railroad was operational and running through it. They had a post office, general store, gas station, and even a school. Once the railroad was shut down, most residents left for Watertown, South Dakota or bigger towns.
